Around Vancouver (without bikes)
Wednesday, September 10, 2014.
The day started with a trip to the nearby laundromat. While our clothes were washing we walked over to the Safeway and bought day passes for the Transit. After the wash was finished we went back to our room to hang up the wash and have our breakfast.
The nearest Skytrain station is Marine Drive, about a twenty minute walk. It was nice exercising other muscles after riding our bikes around the city yesterday. We took the Skytrain to the Broadway station and found our way to Mountain Equipment Coop to relinquish our unused bear spray. After looking around in a few other outdoor stores we caught the #9 bus to Granville St.
Between Broadway and Granville Island there are several spots that have been featured in paintings of mine, so I took Mom on a stroll down memory lane. This scene looking down the alley from Broadway inspired my first ever graffiti landscape painting from 2002 called “Super Battle”.
I pointed out a few other spots as we strolled down the alley towards the island. When we got there we caught the Aqua Ferry to Yaletown and then the Skytrain to Waterfront station.
From Waterfront we caught the Sea Bus across Burrard Inlet to the Lonsdale Quay Market on the North shore. We bought some food including smoked, candied salmon for lunch and found a bench to sit and snack. After lunch we caught a bus that went past the Capilano suspension bridge and Grouse Mountain. When we returned to the station we hopped onto the milk-run bus to Vancouver. After an hour we arrived back downtown via the Lionsgate Bridge.
We found the Olympic cauldron near Canada Place and this lego-like orca. Back on the Skytrain on our way back home, we popped off at Oakridge to stop at the grocery store for our supper. Back on the Skytrain again to our stop and then the 20 minute walk back to our hotel. It was 7:30pm when we got in and we were starving.
Tonight was the night we are to meet Tristan and his parents- long lost relatives- for the first time. They are taking in the Whitecaps game and we have plans to meet at 9:30pm after the game back downtown at Waterfront station.
So after we eat we walk back to the Skytrain station and ride downtown. We arrive ontime and meet the three of them in the concourse. We go to Steamworks for drinks and to get acquainted. Time flies by and before we know it we have said our goodbyes
and are riding the Skytrain once again. There was a sing song on the way and we chatted with Mark from Liverpool. Finally, our stop. Last walk back to the hotel and it’s nearly 2am. Both of us drift off to sleep in no time.
